So, there’s been a bit of speculation regarding what the hell I’m actually shipping at any given point in time in what I’ve contributed to TF2Chan. While I think it’s obvious what I prefer, I like to keep pairing declarations on the DL. This is due to a reaction I have when I read other stories. Unfortunately, a very good story can deter me by outright declaring who is screwing who. What’s the fun in telling me? Unless it’s a PWP or just a fluff piece, I don’t need to know offhand. Let me figure it out on my own.

I’m sure you’ve also had that story that you’ve tried, then given up due to the pairing. Perhaps a thought like, “Oh, (X) x (Y)? Well, I’m not fond of it, but I’ll try.” Then you rage-quit the story after seeing one chapter solely devoted to just the two people involved in the pairing. (Or more, who’s to say.) I’m not proud to admit that’s happened to me, but it has. I’m more likely to abandon a story after seeing an original character or a classmate with a name that is not canon, but I’m still prone to abandoning the ship upon seeing shipping.

So, what do I ship?

I apologize for contributing to that bit of silliness.  It irritates me to see people badgering authors for ship in every single fanfic that gets posted on the chan, especially when shoehorning romance into the story in progress would make absolutely no frigging sense; in the case of your current, why the hell would Spy and Sniper be spending time snogging when they’ve been kidnapped by an armed enemy who is trying to force them to go on what is probably a crazy and dangerous globetrotting adventure for her? 

As a fan, I consider it pushy and rude to bug authors and artists to put my personal kink into stories or pictures that they’re busy writing/drawing for their enjoyment and that, especially in the case of a fanfic in progress, they likely have a good deal of the story already plotted out.  If an author or artist is asking for ideas in regards to a work-in-progress, it’s another matter.

When it comes to shipping fic, the problem that I have is exactly what you describe.  Longer fics that announce themselves as, “Spy/Engineer” or “Heavy/Pyro” or “Whoever/Whatever” have an unfortunate tendency to end up focusing only on one or two characters, and in the case of a ‘serious’ fic, it always feels like the author is selling him/herself short or just being lazy by not even bothering to include interaction between the heroes and their teammates.  (see: “The Author Forgot That Demoman Exists”) 

For me, the most enjoyable TF2 fics that aren’t senseless pornographyare the ones that involve the entire team interacting, even when some characters are focused on more than others.  It makes sense to have a hero in your story, after all.  It’s just a turn-off when a story about “Team Fortress 2” becomes a story about “Spy and some other people who don’t really matter”.

With the addition of the Cozy Camper, I’m pretty sure all of my TF2 fan fictions are going to center around suffed animals and dolls.

This is a garantee.

Pocket Medic is very important to my Medic/Heavy fic.

And I’m pretty sure whenever I write that Engie/Sniper piece, Cozy Camper Koala will make an appearance.

I can’t deal with this.
